“1st International Workshop on

Synaptic Plasticity and Neurotransmission”

“International Symposium

on Neuronal Plasticity and Neurogenesis”

Montevideo, March 26 - April 7, 2006

Hosting institutions: Instituto Clemente Estable (IIBCE), School of Sciences (UDELAR) and School of Medicine (UDELAR)

Objectives:

To facilitate an up-to-date and really “hands-on” approach to synaptic plasticity, neurotransmission and neurogenesis, with a focus on experimental, practical Seminars. To foster cooperation among neuroscientists –students and researchers- from the Latin America.

Lectures: Cell cycle control in neurodevelopment. Stem Cells and Neurogenesis. Generation of neuronal polarity. Mechanisms of dendritic tree development. Path finding signaling. How intrinsic properties determine neuron´s role in a circuit. Dendritic mechanisms of signal processing. Synaptic transmission modulation. Efficacy control in electrical synapses. Receptor-mediated and activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. Mechanisms of neuronal differentiation and maturation. Glial roles in development, neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. Plasticity and regeneration in trauma, neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration.

Language: An operative use of English and Spanish is required.

Selection of students: 20 Students (from Latin American countries) will be selected on the basis of their curriculum and their chance of employing the acquired knowledge in their countries. About 8 (eight) foreign students will receive an accommodation and subsistence fellowship plus (if possible) a small contribution to their travel cost. When selected applicants state clearly that they can afford their travel costs, the organization will assure allocation and subsistences.

The Organizing Committee will communicate, without appeal, its selection to applicants (by E-mail) not later than February 28, 2006.

Application should include 4 documents :

1) a cover letter stating the reasons for the interest in the workshop and how it may contribute to the student future.

2) a Ficha de Inscripción/Registration Card” (see below), with all required data completed.

3) a short curriculum vitae (2-9 pp.) with a list of publications, if any.

4) a letter of recommendation.
